The Bernard “Buster” Brown Legacy Scholarship

Built to give someone in this profession the opportunity to step out, learn, and grow — and to bring that impact back to their center and their people.

Bernard “Buster” Brown

His legacy

More than 40 years of showing up.

Bernard “Buster” Brown gave more than 40 years to public safety — as a telecommunicator, EMT, and firefighter, and eventually a leader at the highest levels of the profession, including serving as President of the National Emergency Number Association.

But if you talk to the people who knew him, that's not where they start. They talk about how he showed up — the way he took time for people, shared what he knew without hesitation, and made people feel like they belonged in a profession that can be hard to stay in.

He believed in building people up, in helping others grow, and — more than anything — in the people behind the headset. That's what this scholarship is built on.

Continue the legacy

One opportunity can change how someone shows up.

The scholarship helps support attendance at conferences like NENA and APCO, along with training opportunities throughout the year — because not everyone gets that chance, and sometimes one opportunity is all it takes.

If you care about this profession and want to grow, learn, and be better for your center and your people — this is for you. And if you're in a position to support it, every donation goes toward giving someone that opportunity.

Applications are now open. The Bernard “Buster” Brown Legacy Scholarship is supported by Gold Line Support in partnership with his family.
